The 717 Items in the Smithsonian Catalog

Daniel Garber, "Towering Trees" - acquired 1911

There are currently 717 American paintings/sculpture
that belong to the Art Institute
as cataloged by the Smithsonian.

But at least of them are not on display,
and not all of the ones on display
are in the Smithsonian catalog.

Which is a bit puzzling.

Thanks for publishing the painting by Daniel Garber. I've never heard of him but what a great painting.

I agree -- it's quite a painting -- every detail seems to lead into some kind of ornamental riff.

I just Googled him - and this Indiana boy was quite an elegant figure painter as well.

It's too bad the AIC will never put this painting on display. (or the other one from the Terra collection)
